Summary: World Without End
Comment: Best Book I have ever read, or the best 2 books I ever read. Follett is an exceptional writer and interpretor of history. We have read almost all of his books. This is our first read on a Kindle. 5's all around.

Summary: Book without end
Comment: This book was long and detailed version of life in the medieval times but some of the language was not correct for the time, nor was the thinking. I think Ken Follett's 21st century personality got in the way of the history. But it was fun to read another one of his books.

Summary: Follett excels in this genre
Comment: I only decided to read this novel (And Pillars of the Earth) because of their positive reviews. I have never had any interest in reading books set in bloody middle-ages England. Well, Follett's books are so engrossing that I actually gave up some of my regular television watching just to find out what was going to happen next to these richly defined characters. I think I read "Pillars" in only 4 days. "World without End" has about ten main characters; and Follett makes it very easy to keep up with them and gives hints about what happened to them earlier. It also became easier in this book for me to accept the gory episodes that occasionally cropped up - in fact I actually enjoyed them.
I guess that proves to me that sometimes I should listen to the vast majority; and hope that Follett churns out another one.

Summary: Modern soap opera in a medieval setting
Comment: I remember enjoying Pillars of the Earth when I read it 15 years ago, so I decided to give this one a try. What a disappointment. I was expecting historical fiction and what I read was a soap opera in a medieval setting. What bothered me the most, was the use of modern English vocabulary and 21st century values in the story. This anachronism makes the story nothing more than a cheap bodice ripper with a nice medieval setting. The heroine is especially unlikely. A 13 century woman who is an staunch atheist and undergoes an abortion so that she can focus on her career is not very believable. And she uses the word "hocus-pocus" to describe religious beliefs!

The story itself has some entertainment value (hence 2 stars), but don't expect an accurate depiction of medieval life.

Summary: Too long for too little
Comment: I love Ken Follett and particularly "the Pillars of the Earth" it was magnific, epic one of the best books I have read in this genre. I really could not wait for the announced sequel and read it as soon as it was available. The disappointment was enormous. It is way too long for his meager story, it turns around the same theme again and again. Some passages are so sugery I thought it could come out of some Danielle Steel book. The details about building techniques are interesting but again for the few. This book is somewhat of a mis-match it wants to combine learned information with a very uncomplicated love-story and it dis not work out.
Better luck nest time.
Christina
